“Postpartum doulas understand what everyone needs, and part of their role is to help the entire family adjust and settle in.”
Many new families will tell you that navigating through those first few days and weeks after bringing home a new baby can be challenging! Even for experienced parents, having a new baby at home means big changes in your days, conquering tasks, time and just trying to figure out how to juggle it all.
A postpartum doula is there to help a new family in those first days and weeks after bringing home a new baby. As a postpartum doula, I can provide evidenced based information on newborns such as infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother–baby bonding, infant soothing, as well as hands on help with everything from basic newborn care, meal prep and letting you sleep or shower.
Embrace Doula works with each family individually to find out their particular needs. At the beginning of a visit I always ask what you would like to have assistance with that day and every visit is different. Some of the duties that a postpartum doula can help with include:
- Help with the emotional and physical recovery after birth
- Breastfeeding support
- Light housekeeping so that mom does not feel so overwhelmed
- Assistance with newborn care such as diapering, bathing, feeding and comforting
- Light meal preparation
- Baby soothing techniques
- Sibling care
- Referrals to local resources such as parenting classes, pediatricians, lactation support and support group
